RELAXATION FOR BODY AND MIND - REFLEXOLOGY MASSAGE
Anyone who has treated themselves to it once will want it again and again: foot reflexology. How does it work? What does it do? And why is it so good? These are the questions we want to address here.
You may have seen one of those colorful illustrations showing two feet, divided into many different color zones and labeled with the names of bones, organs and muscle groups. At the tip of the big toe, for example, it says "skullcap", a little lower "skull" and "jaw", below "cerebrum", "cerebellum", "base of skull" and "neck". At the other end, towards the heel, are the "abdomen and pelvis", and at the back inside the "urinary bladder".
The idea behind this is that there are reflex zones on the foot that mirror all the organs and muscle groups in our body and interact with them. Although not scientifically proven, foot reflexology, which originates from the Far Eastern tradition, is said to have all kinds of benefits, especially as a supportive measure for chronic illnesses - from digestive and menstrual problems to allergies and diseases of the skeleton or musculature. Foot reflexology is also said to help with sleep disorders, depression, migraines and stress.
How does it work? First of all, the alternative practitioner, physiotherapist or masseur will ask you whether you have any complaints or pre-existing conditions. They will also examine your feet for swelling or injuries. If there is nothing to prevent treatment (such as a diabetic foot or open wounds), the treatment can begin. The masseur then stimulates the reflex zones with a localized massage, with the aim of transmitting the stimuli to the corresponding areas of the body via nerve pathways, increasing blood circulation and activating self-healing powers. The treatment can last between 20 and 60 minutes and the price varies accordingly. A distinction is primarily made between two types of massage: calming (sedative) or stimulating (toning).
Whether you believe in it or not is up to you. What can be said with certainty, however, is that foot reflexology massage improves circulation and peripheral lymphatic drainage locally. And, this should also be undisputed, that it simply feels good!
