May Day is an occasion for extensive celebrations and many traditions. Setting up the maypole in public places is probably one of the best-known and oldest customs in Germany and dates back to the Middle Ages. The maypole symbolizes life, love and fertility and is beautifully decorated with colourful ribbons. This tradition is often celebrated extensively with a village or town festival. However, every community should guard its tree well during the nights around the first of May, as there are many thieves. Neighboring villages often take it upon themselves to steal a maypole.
