Barefoot vs. cushioning
The answer is not an "either-or", but the right balance.
Many people ask themselves the question: should I go for maximum naturalness with thin barefoot soles or does my foot need the protection of cushioning? Experienced foot orthopaedist Dr Manke brings clarity to the debate.
The foot loves variety
Dr Manke explains that there is no "one" perfect shoe for every situation. Instead, it depends on the wearer, the surface and a healthy mix:
-
The barefoot shoe: ideal for maximum flexibility. The foot is challenged, has to work actively and the muscles are intensively strengthened.
-
The cushioned shoe: A blessing for long distances on hard tarmac. It reduces the pressure of the body weight and protects the joints from hard impacts.
The common denominator: Regardless of whether you choose a thin or cushioned sole, toe clearance is an absolute must to ensure that your body's foundation remains stable.
"The foot likes variety. Different footwear, but healthy footwear - and most importantly: toe freedom!" -Dr Manke, specialist in orthopaedics
